Wayne Martin shares how his own journey fuels his commitment to helping families build lasting economic stability and opportunity.

When Wayne Martin talks about Community Progress Council’s mission, he’s not speaking from a distance. As Vice Chair of CPC’s Board of Directors, president of MDS Engineering, and founder of The Academic Athlete, Martin brings professional expertise and community leadership to the organization.

But his connection to Community Progress Council begins somewhere much more personal.

A Personal Connection

“I have not always been where I am today,” Martin said. “There was a point in my life when I was walking some of those same paths, dealing with some of the same struggles, trying to figure things out and create a better future for myself and eventually my family.”

That experience shapes how he views both community service and giving back. Rather than seeing challenges through statistics alone, he sees the people behind them and understands firsthand how the right resources and support can change the trajectory of a person and their family.

“Sometimes people simply need access to the right resource, the right opportunity, the right information, or the right person at the right time,” he said.

Martin understands the power of those opportunities because he lived it himself. Growing up, athletics played a significant role in his development, teaching discipline and opening doors. But he credits education with changing the course of his life. That path led him into engineering, earning his Professional Engineer license, building a successful career, and ultimately launching MDS Engineering.

But he’s quick to note that none of that happened alone.

“Somewhere along the way, people gave me opportunities, exposed me to things I had not seen before, challenged me, supported me, and helped me see that there could be more,” he said.

Paying it Forward

Those experiences planted a sense of responsibility that remains central to his work today.

“Success should not only be measured by what you are able to build for yourself,” Martin said. “Part of the measure should be what becomes possible for someone else because you were willing to help.”

That belief led him to Community Progress Council.

The mission resonated deeply with Martin for its focus on long-term transformation rather than short-term solutions.

“How do we help someone get into a stronger position six months from now, two years from now, or five years from now?” he asked. “How do we help a family create stability, increase their income, gain confidence, and ultimately have more choices?”

Martin sees CPC’s whole-family approach as a powerful answer to those questions. He appreciates that the organization recognizes how housing, child care, food, transportation, education, employment, and financial knowledge are often interconnected.

“Real life does not happen in separate categories,” he said.

For Martin, the goal is not simply helping families overcome a single obstacle. It is helping them build a sustainable future.

Sharing his Expertise

Martin also sees a direct connection between CPC and The Academic Athlete, the nonprofit organization he founded to help develop the whole student athlete.

“In many ways, CPC and The Academic Athlete are working along the same continuum, just at different stages of people’s lives,” he said. “Both are ultimately about helping people see that where they are today does not have to determine where they end up tomorrow.”

His personal connection to CPC’s mission inspired Martin to become actively involved in governance. As a board member and now Vice Chair, Martin believes he has an opportunity to contribute his business experience, strategic thinking, and community relationships to help strengthen the organization.

“As an engineer and business owner, a large part of what I do every day is solve problems, evaluate risk, build teams, manage resources, create opportunities, and figure out how to turn an idea into something sustainable,” he said. “I believe those experiences can be useful to CPC.”

Creating Opportunity for Future Generations

When asked what he ultimately hopes his support will accomplish, Martin’s answer centers on one word: options.

He believes that opportunity creates ripple effects that can extend for generations. A family that gains stability today can change what is possible for their children tomorrow, creating new pathways to education, financial security, and long-term success.

“I believe that because I have seen how changing one person’s trajectory can change the possibilities for an entire family,” he said.

For Martin, Community Progress Council is more than a nonprofit organization. It is an investment in York County’s future and in the people who call it home.

“When a family becomes more stable, that impact spreads. It affects their children. It affects schools. It affects employers and our workforce. It affects neighborhoods, local businesses, and ultimately the economic health of York County,” he said. “I view CPC as an investment in York County’s human potential.”
